Advice for patients attending hospital for surgery during the Coronavirus (Covid 19) Pandemic

 

You must isolate for fourteen days prior to admission, this also includes members of your household and the person who is bringing you to hospital, if they are not part of your household.

In practical terms, this means you must:

Stay at home.

Not go to work, school or public areas.

Do not attend any gatherings. This includes gatherings of friends and families in private spaces, for example, family homes, weddings and religious services.

Avoid visitors to your home.

Ask friends, family members or delivery services to carry out errands for you - such as getting groceries, medications or other shopping

Strictly avoid contact with someone who is displaying symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19). These symptoms include high temperature and/or new and continuous cough.

 

You will receive a phone call four days prior to admission to arrange your Covid swab which will be done three days prior to admission at the hospital closes to your home address. This is a drive through service so you must arrive in a car, not public transport, but you can attend on foot if you live close to the hospital. You must attend for this otherwise your surgery will be cancelled. Please note: you will only be contacted if the result is positive.

 

On the day of surgery, you will be required to have your temperature taken on arrival to the Department. The person who is bringing you to the hospital needs to stay in their vehicle, for approximately 20 minutes to allow time for checks to be taken. Please ensure you bring all contact numbers with you.

Confidentiality & Medical Records

Locked blue folderThe practice complies with data protection and access to medical records legislation. Identifiable information about you will be shared with others in the following circumstances:

  • To provide further medical treatment for you e.g. from district nurses and hospital services.
  • To help you get other services e.g. from the social work department. This requires your consent.
  • When we have a duty to others e.g. in child protection cases anonymised patient information will also be used at local and national level to help the Health Board and Government plan services e.g. for diabetic care.

If you do not wish anonymous information about you to be used in such a way, please let us know.

Reception and administration staff require access to your medical records in order to do their jobs. These members of staff are bound by the same rules of confidentiality as the medical staff.

Freedom of Information

Information about the General Practioners and the practice required for disclosure under this act can be made available to the public. All requests for such information should be made to the practice manager.

Consent

Consent can be verbal, written or implied.  In most cases when you are seen at the practice, because you have asked to be seen, consent will be implied.  However sometimes we will request written consent.  Some examples of written consent requirements are:  minor surgery procedures, sending your medical information to an outside agency or certain vaccines. 

If you are under 18 years old and unable to give your consent, anyone with parental responsibility for you can provide consent on your behalf.

All patients aged 16 years and over are presumed to have the capacity to consent to treatment.

You may withdraw your consent at any time.

The NHS operate a zero tolerance policy with regard to violence and abuse and the practice has the right to remove violent patients from the list with immediate effect in order to safeguard practice staff, patients and other persons. Violence in this context includes actual or threatened physical violence or verbal abuse which leads to fear for a person’s safety. In this situation we will notify the patient in writing of their removal from the list and record in the patient’s medical records the fact of the removal and the circumstances leading to it.
